Chapter Ten

Avery silently urged forward the elderly couple ahead of her in line as they dithered with their collection of oversized suitcases, shopping bags, and carry-ons. A shrill yapping from inside a pet carrier at the lady’s feet had her praying its owners weren’t on the same Atlanta-bound flight as she. “Here,” Avery said, taking hold of one of their enormous suitcases. “Let me help you.”

Their half dozen bags stood in contrast to her own empty-handed approach to the next available ticket agent. Too late, she realized she’d neglected to check out of the hotel in her mad dash to escape Connor’s betrayal. Unlike the mess she was leaving behind in Wilmington, a quick phone call to the hotel’s front desk would take care of her left-behind clothes and laptop. In less than two hours, Will’s flight would land, and forty-five minutes later the two of them would be winging their way back home.

Looking over her shoulder one last time, Avery left the ticket counter and joined the queue at the security checkpoint. From the moment she left Connor standing in front of the Carolina Entertainment building, she feared he’d show up wanting a chance to justify his actions. A small part of her wanted him to offer an explanation. On the ride over, she’d come up with a number of questions she’d like to pose to him. Along with a few choice names she wanted to call the lying bastard. The larger part of her simply hoped to slip away to lick her wounds and never lay eyes on him again.

After clearing security, she dropped into a seat at the gate where Rob and Will’s flight would soon arrive. Pulling her phone from her pocket, she stared at the darkened screen and wished she could postpone making the dreaded call to her boss. Putting off the inevitable wouldn’t make the conversation any easier.

The phone rang once. “Did you get Preston to sign?” he asked in his usual abrupt manner.

Man, the guy really needed to work on his people skills. She visualized him sitting behind his oversized mahogany desk. It didn’t take much imagination to conjure up his arrogant sneer.

She wavered on the approach to best break the news to him—the slow build up or cut to the chase. Holding out a sliver of hope that she’d be able to salvage her job, she prayed he’d hear her out. “Mr. Preston liked the amenities we offered, and our aircraft availability impressed him, but the bottom line was more important to him.” She drew in a breath. “He’s decided on”—her lying lover—“Aviation Options.”

Heavy silence filled the air between them. “I see.”

But did he? She wondered if he’d given any consideration to the fact the final cost of her proposal was the one thing he’d kept under his control. As much as she wanted to lay all the blame on that one aspect of the deal, the real fault still rested with her.

In the taxi’s backseat, she’d replayed the past few days.
